Rivian’s Battery Cooling Tech Means Class-Leading Energy Density

We’re not talking about a small lead here, but some 20-25 percent better than existing EVs.

Upcoming EV startup Rivian Automotive says its battery packs will offer “volumetric energy density” that’s better than any other current EV on the market today. The state-of-the-art battery packs will be used in the company’s R1T electric pickup truck, R1S three-row SUV, and additional future vehicles, like the 100,000 delivery trucks Amazon has already pre-ordered.

Electric vehicle battery cooling is the “bee’s knees” when it comes to maximizing the battery pack’s potential for high energy density. Sure, there many other factors, which we won’t get into here, but those who are informed about the technology will almost certainly agree that active temperature management is key.

Charged EVs sat down with Richard Farquhar — Vice President of Propulsion at Rivian Automotive — to talk about the company’s research, development, and battery platform. Farquhar revealed details about how the startup EV company plans to top all other electric vehicles when it comes to battery energy density.

He goes on to talk about Rivian employing multiple battery modules, each with two cell layers, and a unique cooling plate situation, all of which lead to immense energy density and some 400 miles of range. Farquhar says the system works to draw heat away from the center of each module. He asserts that this is the most efficient way to handle it.

Is This The New Acura MDX Under Camouflage?

Acura’s upcoming crossover is just cruising on the highway with other traffic in these photos.

David snapped these photos of a mysterious, camouflaged crossover on the highway, and was kind enough to share them with us. After looking closely, our team believes this is a concealed example of the next-gen Acura MDX.

The two photos match closely with previous spy shots of the camouflaged MDX. In addition, the new one has center caps for the wheels, and it looks like Acura’s A-shaped emblem is underneath the tape that’s trying to conceal the logo. As a final clue, the crossover wears an Ohio license plate, which makes sense because of the automaker’s development center in Marysville. As of 2017, the company builds the MDX in Ohio, too.

This MDX is under heavy camouflage, but a leak from the company’s software suite shows the new crossover without any concealment. The exterior design has sharper lines than the current one, and the front end appears longer. A more pronounced crease accentuates the rear fenders.

Other details about the new MDX are still a mystery. Rumors suggest the crossover would get a performance-oriented Type S version with a turbocharged V6 and all-wheel drive.

There’s also no info about interior tweaks. Given the competition in the premium crossover segment, don’t be surprised if Acura fits the new MDX with a digital instrument panel and large infotainment screen.

After a minor refresh for 2019, look for the next-gen MDX to arrive for the 2021 model year. This suggests a debut sometime in 2020, possibly in the first half of the year.

FCA-PSA 50:50 Merger Now Officially Finalized

Meet the world’s fourth-largest automaker by projected sales.

Following the initial announcement from October 31, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group have just officially signed the 50:50 merger deal, which effectively creates the world’s fourth-largest car manufacturer with projected annual sales of around 8.7 million cars.

The new manufacturer’s projected revenues will be nearly $190 billion (€170 billion) per year with a recurring operating profit of over $12.2 billion (€11 billion) and an operating profit margin of 6.6 percent. All these numbers are calculated based on a simple aggregated basis of 2018 results.

In terms of consolidations, the newly-formed automaker will have more than two-thirds of its mainstream models based on just two platforms, with approximately three million cars per year on each of the small platform and the compact/mid-size platform.

As previously announced, the board of directors will be comprised of 11 members – five coming from FCA and its reference shareholder and five nominated by Groupe PSA and its reference shareholders. PSA’s current CEO Carlos Tavares will be Chief Executive Officer for an initial term of five years and will also be a member of the director’s board.

“Our merger is a huge opportunity to take a stronger position in the auto industry as we seek to master the transition to a world of clean, safe and sustainable mobility and to provide our customers with world-class products, technology, and services,” Tavares commented.

“This is a union of two companies with incredible brands and a skilled and dedicated workforce. Both have faced the toughest of times and have emerged as agile, smart, formidable competitors. Our people share a common trait – they see challenges as opportunities to be embraced and the path to making us better at what we do,” Mike Manley, FCA CEO, added.

How the Carbon Tax affects your refrigerant pricing!

Under the Australian Governments “Clean Energy Future Plan” synthetic greenhouse gases, like the HFC based refrigerants commonly used in transport refrigeration units, now attract a Carbon price per tonne calculated on their individual Global Warming Potential (GWP).

The GWP assigned per kilo to R404a refrigerant is 3260kg. This means that 1kg of R404a equates to 3.26 metric tonnes of carbon.

When this is applied to the current carbon tax price of $23.00 per tonne it means that every 1kg of R404a refrigerant attracts $74.98 carbon tax.

Example: 3.26 x $23 = $74.98

This new tax goes on top of the existing import levy and the cost price per kilo of refrigerant.

Due to the growing costs surrounding the supply and storage of refrigerants there has been a significant price increase to the most common refrigerants used in the refrigerated transport sector.

This increase will not affect your normal unit servicing cost as there is no refrigerant lost during these services. This increase will only affect breakdowns or repairs which involve refrigerant loss. Due to this it now becomes essential to put into place a preventative maintenance program on your fleet to reduce the risk of a small gas leak spiralling out of control & costing you a full charge of refrigerant.

The Government’s purpose through this tax is to give the industry a price driven incentive to reduce harmful HFC refrigerant leaking into the atmosphere.

Companies has built a reputation for providing their customers with added value and cost savings through our products and parts, through the great services we offer and the thorough fleet management programs we provide. Following this trend and with the increased refrigerant pricing in mind we have under-taken some comprehensive research into the main causes and the key indicators of refrigeration leaks in a transport refrigeration system.

Prevention is better than Cure!

What we discovered is that customers who remain on schedule with their regular servicing and those who have adopted our programmed fleet checks were 228% less likely to develop a gas related issue which cost them a full charge of refrigerant than those who only initiated repairs when something went wrong. When refrigerant was used in customers who regularly maintain their fleet it was mostly in much smaller quantities due to early detection.

The significant increase in refrigerant price should create the need for fleet owners and managers to re-consider how they maintain and operate their refrigerated vehicles so that they can limit their exposure to the expense of refrigerant loss.

We have adopted an innovative approach to reduce refrigerant leaks in their customer’s fleets; we have trained our technicians at identifying the key indicators of refrigerant loss through our programmed fleet inspections, we use only quality products like our Manuli Refrigeration hose and fittings and we run a comprehensive scheduled fleet maintenance program proven to reduce breakdowns and gas related leaks which will significantly reduce maintenance costs.

We have a strong commitment to preserving the environment. All our trained technicians are fully licensed to handle refrigerants and understand the environmental impact associated with the release of HFC’s. We take refrigerant leaks seriously which is evident when we perform fleet checks and repairs on refrigerated delivery vehicles.

Today, it is extremely important to align yourselves with a refrigeration service provider like Thermal Mark who has implemented a program designed to reduce your breakdowns, lower your vehicle down-time and reduce your leak rates.

SCG Boot Four-Door Getting Weird Interior Layout With Cool Baby Seat

Back seat passengers will have a clear view of the jumps they’re about to hit.

It seems Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus is freshly charged after scoring a Baja 1000 victory with the Boot. The quirky off-roader certainly has worldwide attention at the moment, and while much of the coverage is related to galavanting over rugged terrain at high speed, a fresh Facebook post from SCG boss James Glickenhaus focuses on another quirky aspect of the Boot – its four-and-a-half seat interior layout for the upcoming four-door model. Wait, what?

Okay, this is really just a four-seater, but it’s impossible for us to not absolutely love the matching car seat that mounts atop the expansive rear console. With such a position, baby has the best seat in the house and let’s be honest – that’s a seriously cool baby seat by itself. We aren’t convinced that child protective services would be keen to hear about high-speed off-road adventures with the youngest family member in tow, but for daily trips around town, it looks like a neat way to travel.

Of course, the other bit of news here is the rest of the Boot’s unconventional seating arrangements. The front seats are pushed inward against the center console, while the rear seats are mounted further apart on a raised floor. Glickenhaus says the design gives rear-seat passengers much better visibility outside the vehicle, which can help folks who get car sick. We suspect that’s especially true if the driver happens to take a “short cut” back home that involves crossing open terrain at high speed. But even for benign shopping trips, this seems like a great way to travel.

In the post, Glickenhaus explains that this design isn’t set in stone just yet. We’ve seen the two-door Boot in action, but the four-door version hasn’t been completed just yet. Plans are in place to have 20 Boots with two- or four-door models on the road next year.

Australia’s Holden Colorado Pickup Spied Testing In Michigan

It will get a minor facelift similar to the Chevrolet and GMC versions in the U.S, market.

General Motors has a modest facelift in the works for its midsize Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck in the U.S. market. The truck isn’t just sold in America, however, and that means other regions should get an updated version as well. Ironically, this right-hand-drive Colorado believed to be a Holden model destined for Australia was recently spotted in southeast Michigan, near GM’s Milford Proving Grounds.

It’s the first Holden Colorado sighting we’ve had, and it’s similar to our previous U.S. market encounter in that the changes will be fairly small. The only camouflage on this prototype is at the front, hiding a new front fascia and possible changes to the hood to match the fresh face. The sides and rear – right down to the taillights – look identical to the current model. That’s not to say some updated lights couldn’t be swapped in later, but if that’s the case, they will slot into the Colorado’s current location without modification.

As for what’s beneath the camouflage wrap, a new upper and lower grille with updated fog lamp housings appear to be the primary differences. Headlights are identical to the current model, which is the exact same trend we saw on the U.S.-spec Colorado and GMC Canyon spy shots from earlier in the year. Those trucks will sport larger grilles in the states to closer resemble their full-size counterparts. Unless there’s more grille hiding beneath the camo coverings down low, it appears the bigger-is-better trend won’t make it to Australia.

Powertrain options are expected to remain the same. Interior layout should also be more or less identical, though some added tech could accompany the facelift. We’re expecting to see the tweaked Colorado debut in the states early-to-mid next year as a 2021 model, and our sources say Holden’s version will likely appear around the same time.

An effective van shelving system and storage system, both in the interior and exterior parts of your utility vehicle, will allow you for more professional-looking and competent workspace.

Vilner Blings Tesla Model 3 Interior With Houndstooth And Turquoise

We’ve never seen wool and wood used like this.

The Tesla Model 3 is popular EV, though some criticize its styling as rather boring. On the flip side, Vilner is known for being anything but boring, and the Model 3 is the subject of the company’s latest effort to make all things with wheels as dynamic as possible. That is, if you consider an orange/blue interior with patterned seats and wood paneling on the dash dynamic.

Vicariously Vilner:

As the photos show, Vilner goes after the Model 3’s interior with a series of fabrics and eco-leather, the latter of which adds a healthy splash of orange to the otherwise dark gray interior. The seat inserts and headrests are adorned with a white/turquoise fabric houndstooth pattern that Vilner calls “a petite-like decorative relief.” The turquoise is repeated sans the pattern on the center console, door inserts, and headliner, and with the Model 3’s large glass roof breaking up the headliner, the effect looks almost like a roll cage created by Smurfs. Weird seat inserts notwithstanding, it’s not such a bad design.

Tesla Model 3 By Vilner

More orange trim is found on the seat belts and sun visors, not to mention the steering wheel and center console. The dash gets something a bit different however – wood. Not a wood applique mind you, but a legit wood panel running the entire width of the dash. It’s at least a lighter shade of wood that’s actually a reasonable match to the orange trim in the car, but it still manages to stand out in an interior that already, well, stands out. We’ll let you, dear reader, decide if that’s a good or bad thing.

Vilner describes its Tesla Model 3 interior as “a unique atmosphere of tranquility, serenity, and captivating hospitality that surrounds you like a homemade garment.”  We’ll concede that it’s most definitely unique.

2020 Ford Transit AWD Gets First Camper Van Build From VanDOit

A modular system allows this van to work through the week and party on weekends.

Ford has an all-wheel-drive Transit for the 2020 model year, and that’s good news for the #vanlife crowd who enjoys straying off the beaten path. Its full-time AWD setup isn’t as robust as a traditional 4WD off-road arrangement, but power to all four wheels should still help the popular full-size van reach new areas. Missouri-based upfit company VanDOit already has a build for the all-wheel-drive model called the LIV.

There are two very different approaches to creating camper vans, and VanDOit takes the modular road. As such, this van can still be set up to function as both an eight-passenger people mover and a cargo hauler when not being utilized for a weekend getaway. A series of T-track systems on the floor, walls, and roof make this van extremely versatile thanks to various plug-and-play components available. Perhaps its most impressive feature, however, is a full-size queen bed on a hydraulic lift in the back. With the bed up, there’s significant room for cargo or a “garage” underneath, and a folding front leaf on the lift allows room for a third row of removable passenger seats to fit ahead of it.

Gallery: VanDOit LIV

The track system allows for all kinds of customization from there. A second bed can replace the garage area beneath the queen, creating a bunk-bed setup that can sleep four people. A mini-kitchen module offers a sink and water storage, as well as a slide-out section for a small refrigerator. A larger kitchen with a taller refrigerator is also available, and there are numerous options for storage. Hot water and furnace systems are offered, as are removable toilets and even a trick stand-up shower that can be used either inside or outside the van.

Admittedly, the modular construction isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as what you’d find in a full-time motorhome, but there’s no denying the LIV’s multi-function capability. Depending on how you spec-out your Ford, VanDOit says pricing ranges from $59,800 to $108,800

Choosing the Right Lift Kit for Your Wrangler

Choosing the right lift kit is probably the most important decision you will make for your Wrangler. It is extremely important to choose the right lift that will meet and exceed all your needs as you build your Wrangler. There are tons of lifts on the market and it will be an extremely difficult decision. But with some basic future predictions of where your build might led, deciding on the lift comes down to only a few basic factors. These factors should be considered and researched before purchasing a lift.

The first factor is what are your plans with your Wrangler. Is your Wrangler going to be a daily driver or a full time, trailered rock crawler? The second factor is what size tires do you want to run? Are you planning on running 33s, 35s, 37s, 40s? Choosing the right lift for the tire size you want to have will save tons of money down the line. The last factor to consider is your budget. Jeep lift kits can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. It is important to know your budget so you can continue to have money for future upgrades that come with a lift kit.

What are your plans for your Wrangler? If you are planning on using it as a daily driver and just want a bigger, new look. You might be best off with a basic lift kit. However, if you are lifting your Wrangler, upgrading to a suspension kit will include shock absorbers, giving you a more comfortable ride.

If you Jeep is a daily driver and you like to off-road on the weekends, consider a suspension lift or a long arm lift kit. A suspension kit will have everything you need to throw bigger tires on your Wrangler. Suspension lifts are very affordable compared to a long arm kit. When I say suspension lifts, I mean lift kits that are fully equipped and include shock absorbers. Upgrading to a suspension lift usually includes the complete set and everything you need to lift your Wrangler. It will come with shock absorbers long enough to keep the ride comfortable. The kit will also include parts most people don’t consider like sway bar links, or new track bars. However, if you want to go a step bigger, and wheel more in the future, a long arm kit might be best.

Long arm kits are expensive but come with a lot of parts and basic geometry behind them. Long arm kits come in many varieties but they all improve driveline angles. The minute you lift your jeep, your geometry on the Wrangler is off, which can cause vicious shaking on the road way. Long arm kits usually come with adjustable control arms so you can correct your axle position and perfect the drive line angles that are usually thrown off when a lift kit is installed. Some long arm kits can lower your Wrangler’s center of gravity. Lowering the center of gravity will improve wheeling and your Wrangler won’t be as top heavy, creating less wavy motions.

The Cost Of Owning A Car In The United Kingdom

When they have passed their driving test and are looking to purchase their first vehicle, many young people forget that the cost of a car is not just what you pay upfront. There is also the maintenance costs from fuel, insurance, parking and much more. These are all things that new drivers should keep in mind when they are budgeting for their first car. However, it is not exactly the easiest thing to budget. After all, the cost of maintaining a car varies from city to city. In one, you could get high insurance prices but cheap servicing. In another, the cost of servicing your car might be low whilst insurance might be high.

Young drivers hoping to get a full picture of how much owning a car would cost in their particular city might benefit from the research produced by Kwik Fit. The British motoring company looked at the cost of insuring, parking, servicing and fueling your car in all of the UK’s major cities. They found that the cheapest place to own a car is Exeter, where it costs only £867, followed closely by Reading, where it costs £1,014. The most expensive city to own a vehicle, on the other hand, is Birmingham where costly insurance, fuel and parking means it is almost three times the cost at £2,170.

There are factors which can help to lower this cost, however, if you are living in one of the country’s most expensive cities. Insurance premiums can decrease if you buy a slightly newer model of car, for instance, or get a “black box” installed that monitors your driving safety. You should also opt for a petrol car over diesel in order to keep fuel costs down. Furthermore, new drivers should be aware of where they are parking. Purchasing a parking space in a private garage might, for example, be more cost effective than getting a permit from your local council.
